The Serial killer case of the century remains mysteriously unsolved to this very day, but before moving forward here’s a little recap. The Zodiac Killer, or simply Zodiac, is the pseudonym of a serial killer who operated in Northern California in the late 1960s. The case has been described as the most famous unsolved murder case in American history and has become a fixture of popular culture and those weird internet creepypasta stories.

He murdered five known victims in the San Francisco Bay Area and targeted young couples. The Zodiac himself claimed to have murdered 37 victims, 2 of which survived. But what was interesting about him was that he had the audacity to write taunting letters, ciphers, and cryptograms to the police and even mailed them to newspapers. The nut job of a human being claimed to be collecting them as ‘slaves’ in the afterlife.

This was a sketch made by one of the survivors but more towards his infamous ciphers, it took 51 years to crack one during which the FBI had released them with a bounty to the general public for anyone that could decipher them. The case was marked ‘inactive’ in April 2004 and has been so for the past few years…until now [ensue dramatic music].

Here’s a photo of one of his ciphers:

Now that you’re all caught up, I’m certain the new question is ‘what now?’ Well, early this October, a team of former law enforcement members, prosecutors, and intelligence officers that calls itself the Case Breakers said they had determined the identity of the Zodiac Killer.

The Case Breakers said they had new physical and forensic evidence and eyewitnesses who supported their theory that an air force veteran who died in 2018 was behind the murders. Yet the FBI remains undecided on the matter and has instead put out this statement-

“The FBI’s investigation into the Zodiac Killer remains open and unsolved. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, and out of respect for the victims and their families, we will not be providing further comment at this time”.

For now, with thrilling new leads, the decades-old case of the Zodiac Killer has certainly taken an interesting turn but only time will tell, if we have, in fact, found the infamous Zodiac Killer.
