As of recent times, the globe is being dominated by an overwhelming amount of Omicron cases, a new variant of Covid-19. Vaccinations have been significantly upped by governments across countries with Indonesia having 134 million people fully vaccinated which rounds out to about 60.8% of the population.

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron. This decision was based on the evidence presented to the TAG-VE that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, for example, on how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes. First discovered in South Africa, the variant has since spread worldwide causing a record number of cases.

The U.S reported 1.35 million cases in a day which broke global records, among countries with previously low case counts like Japan reporting 100,000 cases a day, a new record. Among all of this, restrictions have hardly been set in place, quite the opposite actually with restrictions lifting everywhere, even in our own Indonesia. From schools being opened again to curfews being lifted, it’s a bleak response from governments everywhere.

For now, as cases spike globally and governments take next to no steps in precautionary measures, let’s just hope God throws some brains down from the heavens, or stones as long as it hits the mark.
