On 8 September 2022, it was announced that Queen Elizabeth II of the British Monarch had passed away at the age of 96, at Baltimore Castle. Shortly after the devastating news of the Queen’s death, the people of the UK and the world alike grieved the passing of the UK’s longest-reigning monarch, after 70 years of her service.

Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 25 years old, had her coronation held on the 2nd of June 1953 at Westminster Abbey, marking the start of a legendary reign that would last for the next seventy years. In 1977, the United Kingdom held her Silver Jubilee celebration, which marked the 25th year of the queen’s rule. She would go on to achieve the Golden Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee in the year 2002 and 2022 respectively. Throughout her life, she has accomplished great feats such as serving in the second world war, forming the Commonwealth of Nations, and modernizing the British monarchy. Two days before her death, the queen also appointed the UK's first ever female prime minister, Liz Truss.

The queen’s death has devastated millions of people all around the world and has surely left a huge impact on both the UK’s economy and society. During the 10-day period of mourning, British institutions were put on hold. Thus the economy of the United Kingdom was prone to double-digit inflation, recession, numerous strikes, and a fall in Sterling. Aside from that, the people of the United Kingdom are undoubtedly suffering from the loss of their beloved queen, who had ruled for 70 long years.

Overall, it may be said that the queen’s service has led the UK to its current state of glory. Her admirable work will be remembered for centuries even after her passing. In a way, the queen’s death not only marks the closing of one of the UK’s most remarkable chapters in its history but also the beginning of a new era for the UK under King Charles III.
